Currently, millions of Americans are living with mental illness, and that number is growing. Mental Health Month was established to increase awareness about mental health’s vital role in our overall health and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Mental Health Month is also a time to highlight how mental health affects us all—individuals, families, colleagues, and our communities—and to celebrate recovery from mental illness.
One key message to consider during the month is that we play a part in one another’s mental wellness. If we remain aware of our mental health and pay attention to others around us, no matter the situation, help is always available.
